The call came to Merced SPCA in California after a friendly stray mother cat and her kittens were no longer welcome on the property where they lived. The owners wanted them gone and had been using unusual methods to scare them away.

Despite the frightening situation, the mother never stopped caring for her babies. She continued nursing, protecting, and comforting them until rescuers arrived and brought the entire family to safety within an hour.

The rescue team was immediately touched by her gentle personality. Even after everything she had experienced, she welcomed her rescuers with remarkable kindness and trust.
The family received the name Breakfast Bunch, with the mother named Muffin and her five kittens called Waffles, Pancake, Omelet, Biscuit, and Toast.

When the kittens arrived, all five were severely underweight and showing signs of illness. They urgently needed nutritious food, medication, and proper medical attention.
During Muffin’s veterinary examination the following day, the team discovered something shocking. She had been shot with a BB gun just days before her rescue.
Although she continued caring for her babies, veterinarians confirmed that a pellet remained lodged inside her body. The rescue team immediately began preparing for surgery.
The community responded generously, helping cover her medical expenses. When surgery finally took place, veterinarians expected to find one pellet but discovered three instead.
While under anesthesia, Muffin was also spayed and vaccinated, giving her a fresh beginning.
Sadly, Pancake, the smallest and sickest kitten, did not survive. Her passing devastated the rescue team and foster family. Although her life was short, she experienced warmth, safety, and love.
Meanwhile, Waffles, Omelet, Biscuit, and Toast continued growing stronger. Toast became the playful troublemaker, frequently starting wrestling matches with his siblings.

Muffin’s recovery has brought another beautiful change. She is becoming increasingly relaxed, enjoying comfortable beds, delicious treats, and playful moments.
She still checks on her kittens regularly, but she no longer needs to protect them every moment.
After spending weeks shielding her babies from danger, Momma Muffin can finally focus on herself.

Her journey is a powerful reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can change an animal’s life forever. Now, this courageous mother is receiving the love, comfort, and care she always deserved.
