Olympic Star Ciara Mageean Left Her Partner With One Last Promise Before Her Passing

Irish athletics star Ciara Mageean has died at the age of 34, just weeks after celebrating her marriage to her longtime partner, Thomas Moran.

The European 1,500-meter champion passed away over the weekend after battling stage 4 bowel cancer. She had publicly revealed her diagnosis in May 2025.

News of her death was announced through a statement shared on her Instagram account on Sunday, November 1.

“At 6:30am this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones. A beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend, and inspiration to so many, she will be deeply missed.”

The announcement concluded with the traditional Irish blessing, “Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam,” which translates to “May her soul be at the right hand of God.”

Following her diagnosis, Mageean spoke openly about the emotional challenges of living with the illness. During an appearance on BBC’s GAA Social, she acknowledged that “sometimes it gets a little harder to hold on to the hope,” according to the Mirror.

“Then I pick myself up, and I shake myself off and remind myself there’s always some hope, so commence a new batch of treatment, continue to look forward to the things that I’m hoping to look forward to,” she said.

Despite the difficulties she was facing, Mageean remained determined not to let her illness take away an important moment in her personal life.

“Myself and Thomas are getting married in October. I’m not going to let this cancer get in the way of that.”

She and Moran married in October, according to Tyla. Their celebrations included a beautiful ceremony at Darver Castle Estate, followed by a smaller civil ceremony in Belfast.
