Elon Musk Responds to Republicans’ Stunning Midterm Loss After Spending Over $474 Million

Elon Musk has responded after reportedly spending $474 million supporting Republican candidates in the midterm elections, only to see many of the politicians he backed lose their races.

“Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time,” Musk, 55, posted on X on Monday, November 4, shortly after Texas voters elected James Talarico to the U.S. Senate, chose Gina Hinojosa as their next governor, and supported several other Democratic candidates for statewide positions.

Just one minute earlier, the billionaire entrepreneur had shared another humorous message on the platform.

“Data centers in space looking pretty appealing right now,” he wrote.

Musk, who moved the headquarters of Tesla, SpaceX, and X to Texas after relocating there in 2020, had supported Republican candidates Greg Abbott, Ken Paxton, and Dan Patrick. Their campaigns were part of his broader effort to help Republicans maintain their political influence in the state.

According to campaign finance records analyzed by CNBC, Musk directed nearly half of his political contributions — approximately $224 million — toward candidates in Texas.

James Talarico Responds After His Texas Victory

After receiving 55% of the vote, 37-year-old James Talarico specifically addressed Musk and other wealthy political donors during his victory speech.

“We just sent a message to every billionaire mega-donor, every trillionaire mega-donor, every corrupt defender of this broken political system,” Talarico said.

His remarks came after Musk had invested heavily in Republican campaigns, making the election results particularly notable in Texas.

Elon Musk Returned to Politics After His Disagreement With Trump

Musk’s involvement in the midterm elections followed a period when he had stepped back from political activity after a public disagreement with President Donald Trump.

However, in July, he changed course and resumed investing in political campaigns.

The relationship between Musk and Trump also appeared to improve over time. The two were seen together at Charlie Kirk’s memorial service in September 2025 and later traveled to China during Trump’s state visit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in May.

Their renewed association also attracted attention from Republican political strategists.

In July, Trump senior political adviser James Blair, who previously served as White House deputy chief of staff from 2025 to 2026, spoke to Axios about Musk’s political operation.

Blair described Musk’s organization as “an essential partner” in the 2024 presidential election and said it would provide a “huge boost” to Republicans during the following election cycle.

“We will again outsmart our opponents and ruthlessly execute our mission for the GOP between now and Election Day,” Blair said at the time.
