Celeste’s tale, about a loyal mom dog, has impacted people all across the world. Celeste, although being serene, polite, and loving, was heartlessly abandoned when she became pregnant at the age of two. She was forced to live on the streets and give birth in an unsafe environment.
Due to her difficult circumstances, she wasted away to nothing despite doing all she could to care for her adorable babies.
The life of a street dog is harsh. You must also give birth to, feed, and care for five pups. Celeste and her five pups were found very malnourished, which makes sense. Every nutrient she had was spent on feeding and keeping her babies warm throughout the harsh winter.
“She was so emaciated, and those puppies were just nursing like crazy, and she just performed her duty as a mom even though she was starving to death,” Elaine, Celeste’s foster mom, recounted.
Despite their tough start in life, Celeste’s pups were revealed to be in near-perfect health. Celeste’s body bore the wounds of hunger from her battle to keep her five pups alive. For the last five months, the caring mother had done all she could to keep her children safe and healthy. Celeste was the one who was finally being noticed.
“Celeste would rather starve than starve her puppies,” according to the BC SPCA. “She has given up everything to ensure her puppies’ safety after a rough life living outdoors, and it’s time she felt the same love.”
When Celeste and her pups were welcomed into the house of BC SPCA foster parent Elaine Nelson-Hosak, it felt fated. Celeste appeared in her life shortly after the loss of her closest friend. It was almost as though the timing had been carefully calculated. They needed one another. Celeste and her babies needed love and care, and who better than a canine companion to heal a broken heart?
Celeste was able to gain weight and power gradually but steadily after that, thanks to a diligent “refeeding” method. Her body responded well to six modest, nutrient-dense meals each day, and she quickly gained 90 pounds. In addition, four of her five pups have already been adopted and have had a wonderful reunion.
Based on how well she responded to treatment and how much she bonded with her foster mother, she had definitely found her permanent home. Celeste, affectionately known as “Momma” by her family, is now enjoying the life of a spoiled puppy, snuggling on the couch with her family and keeping warm by the fire. It’s a far cry from her previous existence on the streets. She’s no longer withering, but she’s found her purpose. Momma is now safe, warm, and cherished.
